(ADPnews) - Oct 1, 2009 - The Chinese arm of global direct-selling company Amway Corporation said it will not offer its products on the biggest auction website in the country, taobao.com, Global Times reports.
Liu Mingxiong, vice president of Amway China, said the decision of the company is based on fears that Internet sales will lead to unfair rivalry among members of its personnel engaged in direct sales. He also warned customers about dubious products with the Amway brand sold online at a 50% reduced price.
The 2008 sales revenue of Amway China registered a growth of 28% year-on-year to CNY 17.6 billion (USD 2.58bn/EUR 1.76bn), representing 31% of the overall revenue of Amway Corporation.

Amway hails move for bill on direct-selling firms

Baddi (HP), AMWAY India, a leading company engaged in direct marketing of consumer products in the country, has welcomed the Union Government’s proposal for a legislation to control `direct selling’ business in India. Speaking to a media delegation from Andhra Pradesh at their manufacturing unit at Baddi in Himachal Pradesh, Amway India managing director and chief executive officer William S Pinckney hoped that the legislation would protect the interests of consumers, dealers and companies. Besides, he said, the legislation would help increase the reputation of genuine companies in view of the several bogus companies duping public in the guise of direct selling. Pinckney said the mushrooming of fake companies resulted in misinterpretation of direct selling and caused damage to the reputation of genuine companies like Amway India. ``There should be a code of conduct, which is likely to be brought in by the legislation to boost the business,’’ he said. Considered to be one of the biggest direct-selling companies in the world, Amway India is facing legal and social hurdles for allegedly indulging in wrongful marketing activities. Despite its legal battle in Andhra Pradesh for alleged duping of its dealers, Amway India is planning to triple its production at its Baddi unit to cater to the needs of Andhra Pradesh and other southern States which comprise 50 per cent of its business. Amway India grew by 40 percent during 2008-09, earning Rs 1,128 crore against Rs 800 crore during 2007-08. The business is expected to touch Rs 2,500 crore by 2012-13 and a rise in revenue by 27 percent this fiscal. “About Rs 55 crore is being invested for expansion of the unit to be completed by February next year,’’ said Sajan Kiran, assistant vice-president of Sarvotham Care at Baddi, which manufactures about 85 percent of the Amway products. Further, the company is launching new products like coconut oil, amla hair oil, disposable razors and shaving creams this year.
